Tip Calculator

The tip, the total and what each person pays, at any percentage

This tip calculator works out the tip on your bill at the percentage you choose, adds it to the total and splits it between everyone at the table, with the option to tip on the amount before tax. It compares 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% and 25% at a glance, and it also tells you what percentage you tipped from what you paid.

The key idea

Tipping on the total is not the same as tipping on the food

On an $80 meal with $6.40 of tax, a 20% tip on the pre-tax amount is $16; on the total it is $17.28. Split four ways, each person pays $25.60 or $25.92. Choose the base on purpose rather than by habit.

01

How it is calculated

Tip = base × tip %    Each person = (bill + tip) / people

The base is either the food and drinks before tax or the whole bill. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount; others tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is the tip on the tax itself.

To find what percentage you tipped, it works the other way round: tip % = (what you paid − bill) / base × 100. If you paid $100 on that $86.40 bill, the $13.60 tip is 17% of the $80 before tax.

Tipping customs vary by place and service, and some restaurants add a service charge or an automatic gratuity for large groups: check the bill before adding a tip on top.

Worked example

An $86.40 bill that includes $6.40 of tax, a 20% tip on the $80 before tax: $16 of tip and $102.40 in total. Split between 4 people, each pays $25.60. Tipping 20% on the whole bill would be $17.28.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Back to the calculator
How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Move the decimal point one place to the left and double it: on $80, 10% is $8, so 20% is $16. The calculator does it for any percentage and splits the total.

Should I tip on the total or before tax?

Either is common; tipping on the amount before tax is a little less. On an $80 meal with $6.40 of tax, 20% before tax is $16 and 20% of the total is $17.28.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people: $102.40 among 4 is $25.60 each. If people ordered very different amounts, split by what each ordered instead.

What if the restaurant already added a service charge?

Then a tip is usually already included, or partly included. Read the bill: an automatic gratuity or service charge is often added for large groups.

How do I know what percentage I tipped?

Subtract the bill from what you paid and divide by the bill: paying $100 on an $86.40 bill with $6.40 of tax is a $13.60 tip, 17% of the $80 before tax. Choose “What percentage I tipped” and the calculator does it.

Are tips taxable for the server?

Yes, tips are taxable income for the worker, although for 2025 through 2028 qualifying tipped workers can deduct up to $25,000 of tips on their federal return. That does not change what you pay at the table.
