The key idea

Converting to Celsius is not just dividing: you subtract 32 first

The Fahrenheit scale has a different zero: at normal pressure, water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F. That is why 32 °F is 0 °C, not 32 °C, and halving the degrees is not enough. The exact formula is °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, so 77 °F is 25 °C.

01

How it is calculated

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9    °F = °C × 9/5 + 32    K = °C + 273.15

Quick mental trick from °C to °F: double it and add 30 (approximate). 20 °C → about 70 °F (exact: 68 °F). From °F to °C, do the reverse: subtract 30 and halve.

02

Worked example

77 °F = (77 − 32) × 5/9 = 25 °C = 298.15 K. A 100.4 °F fever is 38 °C.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Back to the calculator
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For example, 77 °F is 25 °C and 100 °F is 37.78 °C.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 1.8 and add 32: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32. For example, 25 °C is 77 °F.

At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius the same?

At −40 degrees: −40 °F is exactly −40 °C. It is the only point where both scales read the same.

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

About 176.67 °C; on an oven dial in Celsius, the closest setting is usually 175 or 180 °C. Other common oven settings: 375 °F is 190.56 °C and 400 °F is 204.44 °C.

What is Kelvin?

It is the SI unit of temperature, and its zero is absolute zero, −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F. It is written K, without “degrees”: 32 °F is 273.15 K.

What is 98.6 °F in Celsius?

It is exactly 37 °C. If a thermometer or a leaflet from another country says 38 °C, that is 100.4 °F.
